The docuseries was greeted with backlash from some local officials, including the Pulaski County judge Barry Hyde claiming he never signed the project and only found out about it when he saw a trailer online.
“This is a reckless decision by the Pulaski County Sheriff and highlights the need for our new state prison to keep repeat offenders off the streets and our communities safe,” the Arkansas governor said. Sarah Huckabee Sanders said in a statement in March.
Higgins defended the experiment at a conference in May. “We can do things differently,” he said. “We can create a community that is safer, not only for the deputies, but for the inmates as well.”
