The Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority warned Consumers are avoiding a brand of chocolate and candy containing mushrooms after the products were linked to dozens of illnesses and several hospitalizations.
Chocolate, gummies and cones from the brand Diamond Shruumz were recalled by manufacturer Prophet Premium Blends on Thursday. The foods have been linked to serious symptoms, including seizures, central nervous system depression, agitation, abnormal heart rate, hyper/hypotension, nausea and vomiting, the FDA said.
At least 39 people have been sickened by the food, including 23 who have been hospitalized, the FDA said. The products have been under investigation since early last month.
States where cases have been reported include Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Tennessee.
The company said the recall was related to the ingredient muscimol, a chemical found in some mushrooms that could be a possible cause of the symptoms.
The FDA said Prophet Premium Brands discovered “higher than normal amounts” of muscimol in its products during an investigation into the reported illnesses.
The agency has advised consumers not to eat the foods and retailers to pull the products from their shelves. The products are still being jointly investigated by the FDA and the Centers for Disease Control.
