Dania Furniture is recalling a bookcase sold online and in stores nationwide after an unanchored cabinet tipped over, killing a 4-year-old child, the Boise, Idaho-based company and the Consumer Product Safety Commission said Thursday.
Dania Furniture said it received the report on the child's death in August 2023. A law that prescribes safety measures designed to prevent such tragedies have had an effect the next month.
Of the recalled bookcases, which were made in Italy, approximately 940 were sold from November 2017 through February 2024 for approximately $370. The recall notification declared.

The recalled product contains six storage compartments and is made of brown wood with three white sliding doors. The bookcase is 35.5 inches wide, 16 inches deep and 73 inches high. A label on the back has the SKU number LB2225/A.
Households that have the product in their homes should stop using it unless it is anchored to a wall. Unanchored appliances should be placed in a place where children cannot reach them, the warning says.

Owners of the bookcase should contact Dania Furniture to arrange a free installation of a tilt protection kit at your home. The company is also offering a refund for those who would prefer to have the recalled bookcase picked up and returned.
The company can be reached at 844-722-6347 from 9am to 6pm (PT) Monday through Friday, by emailing ProductSafetyHotline@interline.com or online here.
Products manufactured before September 1, 2023 are not subject to the Sturdy Act. This law requires manufacturers to take measures to ensure that furniture such as chests of drawers is less likely to fall on children.
In addition, parents and others are urged to anchor TVs and other large furniture to the wall so that children cannot pull them down. The law requires that new furniture be sold with anchoring kits.
From January 2013 through July 2023, there were 137 child deaths reported from tipping furniture, TVs and appliances, injuring 17,800 people each year, according to Unpleasant the CPSC. Between 2000 and 2019 451 children under the age of 17 were killed due to furniture and TVs being knocked over and crushed, the agency has noticed.
Thursday's recall by Dania Furniture marks it fifth recall this year due to the risk of falling over.
