American Footballer Ratings vs Panama: Tim Weah Gets Red for USMNT in Copa America; Antonee Robinson decent

It was a match that had it all United States was defeated 2-1 by Panama Thursday in their second group match at the Copa America. Tim Weah was sent off in the 18th minute, and although the United States tried to get back into the match, they didn't have it in them to hold on to a draw on a night when they had a chance to qualify for the knockout stages of the Copa America. Let's see how the team did:

Goalkeeper: Matt Turner

Although it was a tough match for Matt Turner, it wasn't even his fault as a flying foul from a Panama player left him with a shoulder injury. Turner should have done better on Cesar Blackman's goal, and the injury had an impact there, forcing him to be replaced by Ethan Horvath at half-time.
Rating: 5

Left back: Antonee Robinson

Another match, another excellent performance for Antonee Robinson as there is no doubt he is the best defender in the USMNT. Robinson did his best to create during the match and provided an assist for Folarin Balogun's goal. He was one of the men beaten for Panama's go-ahead goal, but had he committed a foul it could have ended in another penalty.
Rating: 6

The CBS Sports Golazo Network presents Call It What You Want, a weekly podcast featuring Jimmy Conrad, Charlie Davies, Brian McBride and Tony Meola discussing all things USMNT and the state of play in the United States.

Central defender: Tim Ream

Everything changed when the United States went to 10, as Ream's death had to be much more immediate. Defensively he was okay in keeping Panama in check, but none of the defenses really covered themselves in glory during the match.
Rating: 5

Centre back: Chris Richards

He almost scored a goal in the opening five minutes of the match and picked up a yellow card for defending Christian Pulisic when he was brought down on the pitch, but like most of the defense Chris Richards had a night to forget.
Rating: 5

Right back: Joe Scally

I feel like I'm a broken record, but the defense including Joe Scally did what they could, but it wasn't enough. There were moments, especially when Gregg Berhalter moved to a back three, when Scally got forward well, but it didn't work.
Rating: 5

Midfielder: Tyler Adams

When the USMNT has 11 men available, Tyler Adams was expected to play 60 minutes, but with everyone expected to run more, he had to be replaced by Johnny Cardoso at halftime. It was another game to forget for Adams, but things got tougher for everyone after the early goal.
Rating: 5

Midfielder: Weston McKennie

A goal was withdrawn for Tim Ream being offside, but Weston McKennie was much more involved in this game than he was against Bolivia. He had to do a lot in midfield to keep up with Panama and for the most part he did what he could.
Rating: 6

Midfielder: Gio Reyna

Sacrificed at half-time to move to three defenders at the back, Gio Reyna is someone who is a standard candidate to make way if his team comes down to 10 men. With just 12 touches in the first half, Reyna was forgettable as Weah's red had a knock-on effect on the rest of the team.
Rating: 5

Forward: Tim Weah

Where do you even start here? A golden rule is to keep your hands to yourself and Weah did not do that, push a Panama player and receive a justified red card. He put his team in a disappointing position and will now miss an important match against Uruguay. Since it was a red card for violent conduct, there is also a chance that Weah could be banned for more matches if the USMNT continues.
Rating: 3

Forward: Folarin Balogun

This was Forlarin Balogun's best match in a USMNT jersey. He had an excellent finish for a goal and was very involved in defense when the team needed him. Balogun made a huge shift for his team.
Rating: 7

Forward: Christian Pulisic

In moments of adversity, the captain has to step up and Pulisic has not fired a single shot in the match. His set play was poor and with the stage set for him to take a step forward, he couldn't find that extra tackle to keep the USMNT offense pushing for more.
Rating: 5

Alternate: Ethan Horvath

Came on for Matt Turner at half-time and although Horvath had two hands on Jose Fajardo's goal, he should have done so more often.
Rating: 5

Replacement: Cameron Carter-Vickers

Fortunately, he didn't concede a penalty and then lost his man due to Fajardo's goal. A poor move from Carter-Vickers in just 45 minutes of action.
Rating: 4

Substitute: Johnny Cardoso

Got to the halfway mark for Tyler Adams and struggled to find the match.
Rating: 5

Replacement: Ricardo Pepi

Almost scored in yet another match, but almost isn't good enough. The USMNT needed goals when Ricardo Pepi came in and they didn't come.
Rating: 5

Substitute: Josh Sargent

Came on late to score, but didn't touch the ball much.
Rating: N/A

Manager: Gregg Berhalter

Gregg Berhalter was not to blame for Weah's red card, but the switch to a back three midgame left players unsure of their roles and created even more chaos. It's a mix of management issues and players not stepping up that now leaves the United States with one of its biggest group stage games under Berhalter.
Rating: 5
